About this ingredient

Lanolin Alcohol is a highly purified mixture of aliphatic alcohols, steroid alcohols, and triterpenoid alcohols obtained by hydrolysis of USP grade lanolin — the natural fat of sheep wool. It functions as an emollient and viscosity builder in a wide range of cosmetic formulations including lipsticks, lip balms, antiperspirant sticks, lotions, creams, and hand creams.

Yellow waxy solid supplied for precise weighing and efficient processing. HLB value 10 · melting point 60–75°C · water-insoluble · preservative-free · USP grade source material.

Formulation tips
  • Add to the oil phase — water-insoluble, must be incorporated with oils and waxes
  • Heat required — melt point 60–75°C, heat the oil phase to at least 75°C to fully melt before combining with water phase
  • Yellow waxy solid — melt into the oil phase before incorporating into your formulation
  • Builds viscosity in emulsions without producing a gel-like texture — smooth, soft finish
  • Excellent for lipsticks and stick cosmetics — provides smooth, even application and good pay-off
  • Contributes moisturizing properties in addition to thickening — dual function in emulsion formulations
  • HLB value of 10 — contributes to emulsion stability when used alongside compatible emulsifiers

What is Lanolin Alcohol used for in cosmetics?

Lanolin Alcohol (INCI: Lanolin Alcohol · CAS 8027-33-6 · HS 9903024400) is a highly purified mixture of aliphatic, steroid, and triterpenoid alcohols obtained by hydrolysis of USP grade lanolin. HLB value 10 · melt point 60–75°C · water-insoluble · preservative-free · waxy solid format . Non-gelling thickener and emollient used in lipsticks, lip balms, antiperspirant sticks, lotions, creams, and hand creams at 0.5–15%.

Common cosmetic formulation uses
  • Lipsticks and lip color — 2–10% for structure, smooth application, and emollient feel
  • Lip balms — 1–10% as a non-gelling thickener and moisturizing emollient
  • Antiperspirant sticks — 2–15% for viscosity building and smooth skin feel
  • Lotions and creams — 0.5–5% to increase viscosity without gel-like texture
  • Hand creams — 1–8% for moisturizing, thickening, and soft skin feel
  • Add to the oil phase — water-insoluble, requires heat to melt (60–75°C minimum)
  • Waxy solid format — easy precise weighing, no chipping or grinding
Product FAQ
What is Lanolin Alcohol used for?A non-gelling thickener and emollient used in lipsticks, lip balms, antiperspirant sticks, lotions, creams, and hand creams. Increases viscosity without gel-like texture, provides smooth and soft skin feel, and contributes moisturizing properties.
What is the difference between Lanolin Alcohol and Lanolin?Lanolin Alcohol is the purified alcohol fraction from hydrolysis of USP grade lanolin — a mixture of aliphatic, steroid, and triterpenoid alcohols with a defined HLB of 10 and melt point 60–75°C. More predictable and easier to formulate with than crude lanolin.
What is the recommended usage rate?0.5–15% overall · 2–10% in lipsticks · 1–10% in lip balms · 2–15% in antiperspirant sticks · 0.5–5% in lotions and creams · 1–8% in hand creams.
How is it incorporated?Add to the oil phase and heat to at least 75°C to fully melt. Water-insoluble — must be combined with oils and waxes. Waxy solid format allows easy precise weighing.
Is it vegan? No — derived from sheep wool. Not animal tested. GMO-free.
What is the HLB value?10 — contributes to emulsion stability when used alongside compatible emulsifiers.
Formulator note

Note: Lanolin Alcohol is a versatile non-gelling thickener that pairs well with INCI VAULT's Kokum Butter in lip balm and stick formulations — Lanolin Alcohol contributes moisturizing emollient character and viscosity while Kokum Butter provides firm dry structure and a velvety finish. Always add to the oil phase at 75°C minimum and allow to fully melt before combining with the water phase to ensure even distribution throughout the formulation.
